kclo3 decomposes by two parallel reaction
2kCIO3 ______ 2KCI 302 (¡¡) 4KCIO3 - 3Kclo4+kcl
if 3 moles of O2 and 1 mol of KCIO4, is produced along with other products then determines initial moles of kclo3

KClO3 decomposes by two parallel reactions :

  • 2KClO_3\rightarrow 2KCl+3O_2......(1)
  • 4KClO_3\rightarrow 3KClO_4+KCl.....(2)

here number of mole of O2 is produced = 3mol

and number of mole of KClO4 is produced = 1mol.

from equation (1),

we see that, 2 mole of KClO3 produced 3 mol of oxygen.

or, 1 mol of oxygen is produced by 2/3 mole of KClO3

so, 3 mol of oxygen is produced by 2/3 × 3 = 2mol of KClO3.

again from equation (2),

we see that 3 mol of KClO4 is produced by 4 mol of KClO3.

so, 1 mol of KClO4 is produced by 4/3 mol of KClO3.

so, total number of mole of KClO3 = 2mol + 4/3 mol = 10/3 mol
