KCN gives cynide but AgCN gives isocynide
This is because:
• CN- is an ambident group that means it can attack from both C as well as N
• KCN has ionic bond therefore it fully dissociates into K+ and CN-
Therefore CN- attacks from C as C-C is preffered.
• But AgCN is covalent compound that means it does not fully get dissociated into CN- ion.
Hence now it cannot attack from the C of CN- hence N attacks and C-N bond is formed.
