when a pencil is immersed in a bowl of water, the pencil appears to be bent and broken. this is due to the difference in the refractive index between water and air.

similarly this also happens in a paraffin band. in each layer of the band, the pencil appears to be bent. here the bands are set vertically according to their densities.
