K. C. Daniel Nadar was an Indian filmmaker who was known as the founder of the Malayalam movie[3]. In the first film made in Kerala, Vigathakumaran (The Missing Child) he produced, directed, wrote, photographed, edited and acted. He also set up The Travancore National Pictures, the first film studio in Kerala. The Cultural Affairs Department of the Kerala Government instituted, J.C. Daniel Award in 1992.in his honour to acknowledge Malayalam cinema's lifetime achievements as part of the State Film Awards of Kerala.

Explanation:

  • Caste oppression was the rule in Travancore in the times that Daniel lived. Most people from the lower caste classes converted to Christianity, a faith that was offered to them by missionaries, to avoid the inhumane treatment and constraints imposed by the high caste Hindus.
  • One day, the young Daniel read an article on cinema production which involved sound in an English newspaper. Daniel was unable to get the article out of his mind. It sparked a deep desire to make films in him and later he visited Mumabi and Chennai in order to learn film production techniques.
  • The Missing Child (Vikathakumaran in Malayalam) was Daniel's first film.  In line with Daniel's orders, Rosi, a Dalit woman,  played the role of Nair Woman named Sarojini, which brought out a commendable performance. On 23 October 1930 at Travancore's Capital Theater, Daniel agreed to screen the film after it had finished shooting.
  • The screening lasted for a couple of days and people started creating problems . They did so intentionally, mostly because a lower caste lady was featured in the film as a high caste. The discomfort slowly became a rumbling and people ripped the theater screens. And then, all of J.C Daniel's little dreams burst into may droplets. After clearing all its debts, a frustrated J.C. Daniel left Trivandrum by selling some remaining property
  • For the sake of his art, Daniel suffered. This cost his money, his belongings and his personal life. His contribution to Malayalam cinema was not remembered when he was alive. His wife Janet asked the government of Kerala for assistance during his last days when he was bedridden. But the rulers just ignored her petition.
  • However, today, J. C. Daniel is celebrated as the Father of Malayalam Cinema. . The work of veteran film reporter Chelangottu Gopala Krishnan rendered this recognition possible. The pioneering creation of Daniel's film after his death has been recognized through Krishnan's efforts. Only after Krishnan's research was announced, the Kerala government granted this recognition.
