Kerosene is an unsaturated compound.
Kerosene burns with a sooty flame because, it is a hydrocarbon with 10 to 16 C atoms in both straight chain and branched formations.
We know that a saturated compounds C to H ratio is high thus carbon burns completely whereas in unsaturated hydrocarbons the C to H ratio is less. So it cannot burn completely, and so it appears as a sooty flame.
