Ketonuria

Ketonuria is a common finding in sick ruminants and is seen in starvation; acetonemia of lactating dairy cattle; and pregnancy toxemia of ewes, does, and beef cattle. A small amount of ketonuria is normally present in dairy cows in early lactation. As a result, it is important that the assay method used to demonstrate ketonuria is appropriate for urine, because there may be a risk for false-positive reactions on some tests. The standard test is sodium nitroprusside, which turns an intense purple color in the presence of acetoacetate, one of the three keto acids.
