kg

10. The mass of a proton is 1.67262 x 10-27 kg and the mass of an electron is 9.10938 x 10-31

Show that the mass of a proton is nearly 2000 times the mass of an electron.

Mass of proton

[Hint:

1.67262 x 10-27

1.67262

x 10-274-31) =

1.67262

x 104

Mass of electron

9.10938 x 107 9.10938

9.10938

= 0.1836151 x 104 - 2000 (approx.)]

The mass of a proton is 1.6726231 times 10 to the -27 power. The mass of an electron is 9.1095 times 10 to the -31.

Esrimate the mass of each particle using scientific notation. This is part a. Part b is to find the approximate total mass of both particles. Part c is about how many times greater is the mass of a proton than the mass of an electron.

ABOUT THIS TUTOR ›

a. the mass of each particle was given, but the value for the mass of the electron is less precise, so we have to round the figure for the proton to four decimal places. So, the proton has a mass of 1.6726 x 10-27, and the electron remains at 9.1095 x 10-31

b.recognizing that the mass of a proton is greater than the mass of an electron, we must change the mass figure accordingly. So, the mass of an electron is 0.00091095 x 10-27

the sum of the two masses is 1.6726 x 10-27 + 0.00091095 x 10-27 = 1.6735 x 10-27

c. to determine how much greater the mass of a proton is, we divide the two numbers. So, the mass of a proton divided by the mass of an electron yields ≅1,836
