Sports standards of a country are reflection of a nation’s advancement and progress. There is direct relationship between a country’s sports achievements and national development and prosperity. Have you ever pondered the fact the most advanced nations in the world have highest standards of sports. America always tops the medal tally in Olympics followed by Russia and China.  

India has made significant progress in many spheres; now the country is aiming at improving its sports also. Khelo India programme has been initiated to bring improvement in sports in India. The Government has made a competitive and practical plan to tap and promote sports talent of young Indian boys and girls. The Government intends to achieve many purposes through this programme. On one hand it aims at providing world class competitive environment to budding athletes and sportsmen, on the other it aims to achieve the goal of inculcating values such as team spirit, strategic & analytical thinking, leadership skills, goal setting and risk taking, etc. The main aim of the programme is to build future all-rounder citizens for the nation.

In this programme the Government will identify talented players at various levels by the High-Powered Committee and will provide annual financial assistance of ₹ 5 lakh per annum for 8 years.

Khelo India School Games, which are a part of the Khelo India programme, were held from 31st January to 8th February, 2018 in New Delhi. Under-17 athletes took part in 16 disciplines such as atheletics, archery, football, hockey, badminton, gymnastics, kabaddi, kho-kho, shooting, volleyball, etc. The event was telecast all across the nation. This really was greatly motivating. It will surely improve the national sports standards.
