Given : Kim was elected class president. she received 3 votes for every 2 that Amy got .No one else ran .

if 8 of the people who voted for Kim had voted for Amy instead, Kim would have received only 1 vote for every 2

To Find : How many people voted.

Solution:

Kim received    = 3A

Amy received  = 2A

Total Votes = 5A

if 8 of the people who voted for Kim had voted for Amy instead

=> Kim Received = 3A - 8

  Amy Received = 2A  + 8

Kim would have received only 1 vote for every 2

=>  3A - 8   : 2A  + 8  =  1  :  2

=> 6A - 16  = 2A + 8

=> 4A = 24

=> A = 6

Total People Voted = 5A = 30

30 People voted
