Let's start with the recognizable plant (sporophyte). The sporophyte produces spores that undergo meiosis (chromosomes are reduced by 1/2) and grow into gametophytes (this is where pollen and ovules are produced. Male gametophytes produce pollen and female gametophytes produce ovules.) and produce gametes. Gametes are sperm (in pollen) and eggs (in ovules). Gametes combine together by fertilization and you have a zygote that grows into an embryo and then a sporophyte (a new plant).

This is called alternation of generations.
