       Line-wise explanation of the poem

In this sonnet Shakespeare talks about the omnipotence of time which vanquishes all finally.

In the first four lines (quatrain) the poet explains how time like sea waves is always ebbing and flowing; time is passing, taking each man’s life towards end, the death. As waves push one another towards the shore, in the same manner moments are pushing one another taking man to his end.

In the next quatrain, the poet explains how each born human being achieves maturity after his childhood, which is shadowed with the crooked schemes of time. The time gave the gift of life; and time plans to take that gift back.

In the third quatrain the poet explains that it is time that sets glow on a youth’s face; and it is the same time that creates wrinkles on that youthful face. The same time destroys the rarities of nature. The scythe of time spares none.

In the last couplet the poet says, his verse shall stand the ravages of time and praise his beloved mentor’s worth and won’t let cruel time obliterate his good deeds.

There are predominantly two poetic devices used in the poem; these poetic devices are: simile, personification.

Poetic devices                                     example

Simile                              Like as the waves make towards the pebbl'd shore

Personification               Time that gave doth now his gift confound
