Answer:

My friend and I were in the market, at the tailor’s. It was around 1 pm in the month of May and it was above 40 degree Celsius. The wind was burning hot and the two of us couldn’t wait to get back to the hostel.

Waiting at the shop we saw a little boy, about 6–7 years old carrying a water-cooler too heavy for him. The boy was thin and weak and too small to be doing what he was doing. He was barely able to take few steps with that water-cooler and would keep it down and rest after every 3–4 steps. This made me very sad.

My friend saw this and immediately went to him to help. The boy hesitated but she insisted. She offered to take the water-cooler to wherever he was taking it, probably to the shop where he was working. I was proud of her. She did not waste a minute before doing the right thing.

She carried the water-cooler till the end of the lane where the boy stopped and refused to go any further. He feared that if his master saw my friend carrying the water-cooler he would thrash him later. My friend reluctantly handed him over the water-cooler and returned. This disgusted me.

A child as little as that, who should not be left unattended on the street is slogging like an animal only because he was born poor. Do people not think of their own children while inflicting such misery on others? Sure, that child was working for the money but empathy rules that the child should not be burdened with physical labour beyond his abilities. A shopkeeper in a locality like that probably makes sufficient money to give away in charity whatever wage he paid to that little boy.

Such apathy towards other humans makes us even worse than animals, who at least feel for their own.
