From the Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 12, Verse 1-7 the following points can be used by Kiran to refute Shyam's argument.

1. God is both in personal and impersonal form since he is everywhere.

2. But the clear realization of God is obtained when we are close to him in the temple.

3. Shree Krishna has said that devotees of his personal form are better than those worshiping the impersonal form.

4. In the temple, we use our senses to the fullest realization of God. We see God, hear the chanting of his name and so the mind is able to easily attach to God and meditate on him.

5. So visiting temple brings us closer to God.

Hope this helps.
