Explanation:

Given Kiran runs along a straight road of length 150 m. After reaching at the end of the road he runs back to his initial position along the same straight path. If he takes a total time of 1 min for completing his running find the average speed and average velocity of Kiran.

  • Now distance travelled is 150 m + 150 m (since he runs to and fro)
  •                                                             = 300 m
  •       Total time taken = 1 min
  •                                      = 60 secs
  •     Average speed = Distance / Time
  •                                = 300 / 60
  •                               = 5 m/s
  •   Average velocity = total displacement / total time
  •       Since Kiran comes back to the same point total displacement is 0
  •  Therefore average velocity = 0/60
  •                                                 = 0 m/s
