Kiran told Naresh that he might not come to class next day ( or following day)

Reported speech is the speech that is consisting of how we embody the speech of other people or what we ourselves say. Basically reported speech is of two types: Direct speech and indirect speech.

When the reported speech is direct it recaps the same words the person used. In addition, the speech reports contain two parts i.e. the reporting clause and the reported clause. The reporting clause includes a verb like say, tell, ask, reply, and shout. The verbs are usually in their past simple form.  The reported clause covers what the original speaker has said.

In the above sentence ‘Kiran said to Naresh’ is the reporting clause and ‘I may not come to class tomorrow ‘is the reported clause.

It is important to learn how to transform direct speech into reported speech. The structure of the reported speech is a little different from the direct speech depending on whether you want to transform a statement, question or request.

In transforming speeches the following aspects are changed:

•    pronouns

•    present tense verbs (3rd person singular)

•    place and time expressions

•    tenses
