After the demise of Kittur Rani Chenamma's husband in 1824, the entire state was in a state of volatility. She had a son to look after too. Her son soon died in 1824 which left an uphill task for the Rani to save the state of Kittur from the hands of British.  

It was only after the demise of her husband and son she went for the adoption of Shivalingappa. He was soon made the legal heir to the throne which angered the East India Company, who wanted an expulsion of Shivalingappa on the side-lines of the Doctrine of Lapse.
