The hermit didn't answer the king's questions immediately as he wanted the king to experience his(hermit) answer instead of learning it theoretically by listening to it. Also, this helped the king understand the answer given by the hermit much more clearly.

The story gives us the moral lesson. The curious king visits the wise hermit as a commoner to get his answers as he is conscientious yet ambitious. The hermit does not speak even a word, but he satisfies the curiosity of the king through his actions. He notices the king’s eagerness in helping the wounded person and his interest in saving his life. The king even forgets his power and proves himself to be a true human. At last when he expresses the desire again to know all the answers the hermit makes him realise that he has himself got the answers of all the three questions. Thus, the story conveys the message that action speaks louder than words and that learning by doing gives better outcome.
