I was in class eight when I realised people read novels, stories and other books as a hobby. I could not understand how they can enjoy reading other books when we already had subjects like physics, chemistry and maths and the course books are more than enough to trouble us.

I simply could not appreciate the rationale behind reading.

Nonetheless, I decided to try my hand at it and asked one of my friends for a very easy to understand novel. He gave me a book which I read and somewhat enjoyed reading.

Now a few weeks later.

One day our class made so much of mess that our prinicipal had come to our class to lecture us. Now she was talking about how we are not doing anything worthwile with our lives and should not trouble our teachers and blah blah blah... In order to give us an analogy she mentioned that she was reading this novel the name of which she couldn’t recall. She said that in the book..a guy sticks a paper on the back of another guy. The paper says "beware of him, he bites".

As soon as she mentioned this my heart started beating faster.

A few seconds passed.

Now In the middle of her vehement lecture I hesitatingly raised my hand. I was sitting in the last row.

She paused abruptly and said "Yes, what is it?"

Everyone looked at me.

Very meekly, I said "Ma’am the book that you are reading is Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Dafoe"

She said- "Ah yes, thats the book. Whats your name child?"

I sensed her furious tone easing. Instead she had a smile on her face now

I felt a little proud in telling her my name.

Also I could see the frown on my classmates' faces.

She went on to say "See, you have such bright children among you. I suggest rather than making trouble, you all should make a hobby of reading"

...the book my friend gave me was Robinson Crusoe only. That was the only book I had read by then and its knowledge gave me one of my proud moments. This incident also ensured that reading becomes my lifelong hobby.
