Answer :

Number of hens = 23

Number of cows = 36

Explanation :

Let the number of hens be x

Number of cows be y.

Equations can be written as,

x + y = 59 _______(i)

2x + 4y = 190 ______(ii)

Now, Subtracting equation (i) × 2 from (ii) :

(2x + 4y) - 2(x + y) = 190 - 2 × 59

=> 2x + 4y - 2x - 2y = 190 - 118

=> 2y = 72

=> y = 36

Substitute the value of y in equation (i),

x + 36 = 59

=> x = 59 - 36 = 23

Therefore, x = 23 and y = 36

Solution :-

Let the number of hens and cows be x and y respectively.

Case I : The total number of animals heads 59.

=> x + y = 59

=> x = 59 - y _____(i)

Case II : The total number of feets are 190.

=> 2x + 4y = 190

=> 2(59 - y) + 4y = 190 [from equation (i)]

=> 118 - 2y + 4y = 190

=> 2y = 72

=> y = 72/2 = 36

Substituting the value of y in equation (i) we get,

=> x = 59 - 36 = 23

Hence,

The number of hens and cows are 23 and 36 respectively.
