Krishna Janmashtami also known simply as Janmashtami, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It is observed according to the luni-solar Hindu calendar, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Shraavana of the Hindu Calendar, which overlaps with August and September of the Gregorian calendar.
It is an important festival particularly to the Vaishnavism tradition of Hinduism. The drama of Krishna’s life dance according to the Bhagavata Purana (as Rasa lila or Krishna Lila), devotional chanting through midnight when Krishna is believed to be born, fasting (upavasa), a nocturnal vigil (jagarana) And a festival (mahotsava) the next day are a part of Janmashtami’s celebrations. It is celebrated mainly in Mathura and Brindavan, along with the main Vaisnavas communities that are in Manipur, Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and other regions.
Janmashtami is followed by the Nandotsav festival, which celebrates the occasion when Nanda Baba distributed gifts to the community in honor of the birth. Hindus celebrate Janmashtami by fasting, singing, praying together, preparing and sharing food, special night vigils and visiting Krishna or the Temples of Vishnu. The main temples of Krishna organize the recitation of Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita.
