Kyle was learning about the moon in his science class. During class, his teacher was explaining about the phases of the moon and he began to wonder when will the next full moon occur? He decided he would investigate by obtaining information about moon phases and the current cycle of the moon.
He first checked his non-fiction book from the library called, “All about the Moon”, but it only contained facts about the moon and the moon phases. He wanted to learn the current view of the moon so he decided to try an online resource.
He used his electronic device to pull up a search engine and he typed “when is the next full moon?”. His search brought up many results, so he decided to click the first site, entitled Lookatthemoon.com. It was written as a blog with many comments from users. One user, LoveLunar20, stated the next full moon was going to be on September 19th.
Kyle then went back to the search engine and decided to try one more site just to fact check his finding and it was a link to the NASA website, nasa.gov. Immediately he was able to view a detailed calendar of the month of September and find the full moon would occur on September 10th. Now he was confused because the two sites reported two different pieces of information.
1. In this story, what information was Kyle trying to obtain? Answer:
2. Name the two sites Kyle visited. What is the main difference between the kind (or type) of website he visited?
3. If he wanted to verify by checking another source, is Wikipedia a credible (or trustworthy) site?
Explain why or why not?
4. Once he determined he had obtained credible information about the next full moon phase, he wanted to share this information with his class. He also wanted to demonstrate what each phase of the moon phases looks like as well as how long the moon cycle lasts. What would be the best way to share information about the moon cycle and the date of the next full moon?
Explain why you chose that method of sharing.
