Answer:
They came to India to for trading purposes and gradually took over.
Explanation:
The British came to India in 1600 for trade as it was the next choice for them as the Dutch had already defeated them in getting a share in the Spice Island trade in Indonesia.
India was being ruled by the Mughals and it was necessary to get farman from the emperor. First Captain William Hawkins represented himself at the court of Jehangir, but failed but it was gradually granted temporarily in 1612.
Sir Thomas Roe was sent as an official ambassador for permission but it was not granted until 1618 Prince Khurrum(shah jahan) granted permission for liited trade only.
The English started to expand their activities and setted up factories in Surat Madras and Bombay. In 1716(reign of Farrukhsiyar) the farman was restored to the EIC. Then British could intefere in the matters of India.
Then they started to take advantage of the weak strategies of the emperors and gradually took control.
After the War of Independence 1857, in 1858 India came under direct control of the British crown and became its colony.
