Answer:

The shadow zone is the area of the earth from angular distances of 104 to 140 degrees from a given earthquake that does not receive any direct P waves. The shadow zone results from S waves being stopped entirely by the liquid core and P waves being bent (refracted) by the liquid core.

Geographical reason "L-waves don't have shadow zone":

  • L- waves are the seismic waves and it is slow in nature. A seismic shadow zone' is an area of the earth's surface where seismic waves detect an earthquake.
  • When an earthquake occurs, the seismic waves detect spherically from the earthquake's focus.
  • The two types of waves, such as "primary waves" (P waves) and "secondary waves" (S waves).
  • The Primary waves are refracted by the liquid outer core of the earth and it does not detect between 104° and 140° from the epicenter.
  • The secondary waves do not pass through the liquid outer core and it does not detect more than 140° from the epicenter.
  • Thus, L- waves do not have shadow zone.
