1.ans : Polyester: It is the most common synthetic fiber. It is made of

polymer called as esters. The monomers used are tereptharic acid, di –

methyl ether and di-hydric alcohol.

Terylene a type of fiber is prepared from it to make dress materials.

Polyester can be melted into different shapes and sizes used to make

plastics.

2.ans : 1. PET – Polyethylene terepthalate.

2. HDPE – High Density Polyethylene.

3. V or PVC – Poly Vinyl Chloride.

4. LDPE – Low Density Polyethylene.

5. PP – Polypropylene.

6. PS – Polystyrene

3.ans : Plastics is the term commonly used to describe a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials that are used in a huge and growing range of applications.

4.ans : Thermoplastics: The plastics melt or deform on heating and soften on

cooling. They are linear chained polymers.

5.ans : Thermosetting plastics: The plastics once molded cannot be

deformed on heating. They are cross linked polymer.

6.ans : Polymers: Thermosets

Alkyds AMC. Properties: ...

Epoxies EP. Properties: ...

Furan. Properties: ...

Melamines/Ure (Aminos) MF, UF. Properties: ...

Phenolics PF. Properties: ...

Polyurethane cast elastomers (EP) Properties: ...

Unsaturated Polyester UP. Properties: ...

Vinyl Esters. Properties

7.ans : Advantages of plastics:

Light in weight

Strong

Durable

Molded into different shapes and sizes

Cheap of cost

Available easily

Recyclable

Non- reactive

Do not rust or corrode easily.

8.ans : Bio-degradable: A material which easily decomposes with natural

process.

Ex: peels of fruits and vegetables, waste food, leftover food, spoilt food,

clothes, paper, clay jars.

Non- biodegradable: A material that doesn’t decompose with natural

process.

Ex: plastic, glass.

Plastic takes 1000 years to decompose. It undergoes slow

decomposition. The process of burning plastics is slow and it releases

poisonous gases mixed up in air leading to diseases and air pollution.

These plastic choke the way of water and kill aquatic animals. It is one

of the reasons for global warming.

Every walk of our life is liked with plastic. We cannot avoid plastic but

can be reduced using of plastic by following 4R principle for creating

eco friendly environment.
