Blography is both a craft and an art. As a craftsman, the biographer begins with research
gathering all the available information about a person's life. There are first the surface facts
about a chosen subject then the biographer looks beneath the surface for evidence of inner
truths - what the man or woman thought, felt, desire, suffered.
The biographer as an artist sets down the meaning of a person's life. With his research at hand,
the writer chooses the fact he will use. Sometimes it is the bulk of detail; sometimes it is the
essence or pith. With this task of selection comes the task of writing of story in a clear,
convincing way. The artist must so construct his book that every portion of the person's life fits
into an understandable, moving whole. The writing must have style; the structure must have
architectural form. That is the meaning of art.
Modern biography, as an independent and popular literary form is fairly new Writing about
individual lives, however, is an old practice. The Bible is full of stories about the prophets and
saints. The earliest Greek biographical writing was done by Xenophon, who wrote about
Socrates in the 4th century B.C. Plutarch's Parallel Lives is still famous. The purposes of early
Greek and Roman biographers were mixed. Some tried to tell the history of a dynasty or of war.
Others attempted to justify a moral or philosophical system. As a result, the human story was
sometimes lost.
Modern biographer's aims are varied. Some wish to tell an exciting, dramatic, and often
inspirational human story. Others study the life of a person so that we can profit by another's
experience and better understand ourselves and the world about us. Still others wish to make
the past more alive. Instead of writing about the impersonal forces of history, the biographers
tell of the impact of an individual on the life of his times.
Biography may be written out of love or hate but never out of indifference. It may take years
to write. It may require thousands of hours of study in libraries, law courts, halls of records city
halls, museums, family archives. Frequently many miles must be travelled to visit the places
where the subject lived and worked, to interview men still alive who can add to the body of
