1. Top soil = The uppermost horizon is generally dark in colour as it is rich in humus and minerals.

2. Sub soil = The Sub soil has lesser amount of humus but more of minerals. This layer is generally hard and more compact.

3. C horizon = The third layer is C horizon which is made up of small lumps of rocks with cracks and crevices.

4. Bed rock = This layer is hard and difficult to dig with a spade.
