Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the most sparsely populated places in India, due to extreme climatic conditions. Ladakh experiences summers of short duration, when the temperatures are between 3 to 35 degrees centigrade. Winters are usually very harsh with the temperature between -20 and -35 degrees centigrade. Heavy snowfall, causes the region to be cut-off from the rest of the country by road during this time.

It is a plateau extending from the Himalayas to the Siachen glaciers and can be considered as a high-altitude desert.
