Lake vostok, an unfrozen lake buried under Antarctica ice,is about 1200 meters deep. Scientists drilled down 3623 meters into the ice to test for signs of life, but stopped 120 meters above the top of the lake to avoid contaminating it. a) Find the position of the top of the lake relative to the ice surface. b) Find the position of the bottom of the lake relative to the ice surface.

The scientists drilled down 3,623 m from the surface of ice on Earth. They stopped 120 m above the surface of the lake.

Hence the lake is 3,623 + 120 = 3,743 m below the surface of ice.

The lake is 1, 200 meters deep.  Hence, the bottom of the lake is at 3,743 + 1,200 = 4943 meters deep below the surface of ice on top of Earth at Antarctica.
