That day, something unexpected happened. It took me by surprise. The old coachman Ali came up to me. He called me brother. Seeing the old man, I stopped. I used to feel bad when others made fun of him. Ali produced an old tin box and emptied five golden guineas into my surprised hands. I was startled. He continued that the guineas were useless to him. He wanted a favour from me. He called on Allah as a witness and urged me to forward his daughter Miriam’s letter to his grave. He knew it was his last day. He did not want to be deprived of Miriam’s letter even when he was dead. I was deeply moved by his fatherly love.
This love was misunderstood so that the employees at the post office made fun of him and called him a mad man. They would call out his name and enjoy his reaction when he jumped up for the letter. I regret that I did not stand up for him then. I promise to make amends and as soon as the letter comes, I would deliver it to his grave.
