Lamprey also known as peteromyzon is of class Cyclostomata which comes under division Agnatgha ( lacks jaw )

  • these are jawless animals and most primitive.
  • they come under sub phylum vertebrata
  • they have rounded/ circular mouth with suctorial funnel
  • endoskeleton is made up of cartilage
  • they act as ectoparasite on some fishes
  • 6 - 15 pairs of gill slits
  • scales and paired fins are absent
  • they have cartilaginous cranium and vertebral column
  • circulatory system is closed
  • development of lamprey is indirect through ammocoete larva which act as connecting link between cephalochordates ( Branchiostoma / amphioxus / lancelet ) and vertebrates ( cyclostomes ).
