Accepted Answer:

Aquatic animals use the oxygen dissolved in water to carry out respiration.Since the amount of dissolved oxygen in water is low as compared to the amount of oxygen in the air therefore the rate of breathing in aquatic animals is much faster than in terrestrial animals.A faster rate of breathing provides more oxygen to the aquatic animal. The terrestrial animals use the oxygen of air or atmosphere for breathing and respiration. Thus a terrestrial animal has an advantage over an aquatic animal in regard to obtaining oxygen for respiration that is surrounded by an oxygen rich atmosphere from where it can take any amount of oxygen.
