LAND RECLAMATION

- the earliest project began in 1784

- Bombay governor William hornby decided to build a grat sea wall which would prevent the flooding of low lying areas of bombay

-the need for more space for the growing population led to the formualtion of several plans, both by govt and private companies for reclamation

-private companies were interested in taking financial risk

-in 1864 the back bay reclamation comapny won the right to reclaim from the tip of malabar hill to colaba

- then by 1870, almost all companies closed down due to the mounting cost

- but the city expanded to about 22 square miles

-as a result population increased, and every bit of land available was built over and new areas were reclaimed from the sea

-bombay port trust, built a dry dock from the excavated earth to create 22 acre ballard estate... which is now known as marine drive of bombay

hope it hepls ^_^
