Improvement of Land

Over a period of time, as the population multiplied and the demand for food went up, the farmers extended the boundaries of their agricultural land by clearing up the forests.

The production of commercial crops like jute, wheat, sugar, and cotton was increased by the British. The demand for these crops increased in the nineteenth-century Europe, where the food grains were needed to meet the demands of an increasing population and raw materials were required for industrial production.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the colonial government found the forests unproductive. The forests were considered to be wild lands that had to be harnessed and converted to agricultural land so that the overall yield of the land could increase leading to enhanced revenue and income for the state. Hence, between 1880 and 1920, the cultivated land area increased by 6.7 million hectares
