The slogan "land to the tillers" was first used in 1977 in the West Bengal by the Left Government to propagate the agriculture production in the total arable land of 54,00,000 hectares in the entire region during that time. It aimed categorically at increasing productivity levels as the Government had promised to free the rural society from the terrible clutches of usury and ultimately the farmers become self-dependent to sustain their livelihood.
