Large Intestine

Its function is to absorb water andsome salts from the undigested foodmaterial. The remaining waste passes into the rectum and remains there as semi-solid faeces.

Digestion is one of the metabolic processes that takes place in our body. The intake of food helps in obtaining nutrients which are helpful for providing energy, body building, protection against diseases etc.

➤ Here is how digestion takes place?

  • Digestion starts from the buccal cavity itself. The Salivary glands releases saliva which constains Ptyalin/Salivary amylase.
  • This enzyme helps in the partial digestion of carbohydrates and breaks down it into Glucose.
  • The food moves into stomach though oesophagus.
  • In the stomach, Protein digestion takes place by the help of Pepsin enzyme. The enzymes are inactive and activated by HCl.
  • The bile and pancreas release their secretions into the small intestine. The food then moves into SI.
  • The Small Intestine completes the digestion process and large Intestine absorbs water and salts from the undigested food.
  • The Undigested food is then stored in Rectum and later expelled out through anus.
