Large multipurpose dams leads to land degradation because first a large area of land should be cleared of by cutting down the trees for creating the dams. This leads to land degradation because the roots of the trees helps to hold tightly the particles of soil but when the trees are cut off they are unable to do so. Second, canals should also be made for the passage of water and that will be done by digging out the ground which will also result land degradation.
