The aorta is the largest artery in the body and originates in the left artery to then branch off into arteries and arterioles. The aorta pumps oxygenated blood throughout the body and requires a lot of pressure to do so. As a result, it needs to be very strong and contain thick walls to sustain this exerted pressure and prevent it from collapsing.
