A smart city is a settlement that uses technology for resolving day to day issues faced by the residents and also improving the functioning of the administration.  

We can help our city become a smart city in 3 simple ways:

1. taking interest in the municipal issues

2. coming up with ideas and implementing changes at a personal level

3. supporting government initiatives

Taking interest in the municipal issues:

The residents  need to interact with the authorities regularly, preferably on social media(since the interaction then becomes public, attracting more attention). It will push the government to help resolve the most common problems today including traffic congestion, air and noise pollution and waste management issues.  

Coming up with ideas and implementing changes at a personal level:  

A very easy way of transforming the city into a smart city is by simply not honking unnecessarily. One can use real time traffic tracking to avoid clogged routes. Additionally, apps can be used to arrange for carpooling. Similarly, segregating the wet and dry waste will help process waste better, reducing the issue of stinky dumping grounds.

Supporting government initiatives:

If a focussed attempt is made to popularise the usage of online services to pay bills there will be fewer people on the roads.Also, lesser manpower will be required to man the payment counters. The same manpower can be utilized elsewhere.  

Each change requires continued effort from the residents and the authorities.
