MUMBAI: Jet Airways passengers on board a Boeing 737aircraft flying from Mumbai to Jaipur on Thursday underwent a painful experience after the crew forgot to switch on the cabin pressurisation system which maintains the pressure inside an aircraft to comfortable levels as it climbs out.

The aircraft had 166 people on board, out of which 30 suffered nose bleeds, while some had bleeding from the ear. Eight people have been hospitalized.

Flight 9W 697 had air turnback to Mumbai, confirmed Lalit Gupta, joint director general, Directorate General of CIvil Aviation (DGCA). "During climb, the crew forgot to select bleed switch due to which cabin pressurisation could not be maintained," he said.

"As a result, oxygen masks got deployed. As per initial information, out of 166 people on board, 30 passengers have nose bleeding, few have ear bleeding and some are complaining of headache," he said. All the affected passengers are being attended to by the doctors at the airport.

Jet Airways spokesperson said: "All guests were deplaned safely and taken to the terminal. First aid was administered to few guests who complained of ear pain, bleeding nose etc".

The official added that the flight’s cockpit crew has been taken off scheduled duties pending investigation. "The airline is making alternative flight arrangements for guests on this flight," the airline said. Both the pilots have also been taken off flying duty pending inquiry.

Ministry of Civil Aviation has also taken cognisance of the incident and has requested DGCA to file its report immediately on the issue.

Total five patients were taken to the hospital after the flight landed. Briefing the condition of the patients, Dr. Rajendra Patenkar,Nanavati Hospital said that none of the passengers will have to be admitted.

"The consultants are evaluating them. Some of them had nose and ear bleeding. It's called Barotrauma. Most of them will have mild conductive deafness for some period of time. Till then they've been advised not to fly," said MUMBAI: Jet Airways passengers on board a Boeing 737 aircraft flying from Mumbai to Jaipur on Thursday underwent a painful experience after the crew forgot to switch on the cabin pressurisation system which maintains the pressure inside an aircraft to comfortable levels as it climbs out.
