Given :  3.5 inches of snow. 6/10 of an inch melted before another storm added 8.3 inches.  lost 4.2 inches to melting

To find : How many inches of snow are left on the ground?

Solution:

Last week we got 3.5 inches of snow

6/10 of an inch melted  => melted  0.6 inch

Remained = 3.5 - 0.6 = 2.9 inch

another storm added 8.3 inches.

=> Snow  = 2.9 + 8.3

=> Snow = 11.2 inches

lost 4.2 inches to melting

=> Remaining Snow  = 11.2 - 4.2  = 7 inches

7 inches snow left  on the ground

if Question is 6/10 of an inch for every inch melted

then 3.5 - (6/10)3.5

= 3.5 - 2.1

= 1.4  inches

1.4 + 8.3 - 4.2  =  5.5 inches   left on the ground
