Last year, Juan drove to the Grand Canyon. He went south from his town for 280 miles. hen, he drove east 64 miles. If a road was built directly from Juan’s town to the Grand Canyon, approximately how much shorter would Juan’s trip be if he was able to take the new direct route? Round to the nearest mile.

Answer:

287 miles

Step-by-step explanation:

Current route and possible direct line form a right triangle with sides of 280 miles, 64 miles and x.

Since x is the hypetonuse of the righ triangle it can be calculated as:

x^2=280^2+64^2

x^2=82416

x=√82416

x=287 miles rounded to nearest mile

Hope it helps,
