Answer:
Said to is converted to asked or enquired etc.
As the direct speech is in past, the reported speech will also stay in Past tense.
2nd person changes to 1st person so You will be replaced by I.
Yesterday will change to Day before
Lastly, the ? Is removed as reported speech converts the question into a sentence and its not considered a interrogative sentence anymore.
Hope its clear.
"Why were you late to school yesterday?" - Direct speech.
The teacher asked my why I had been late to school the previous day - Reported Speech.
Note: The rule to convert a Past Indefinite Tense Direct Speech into Reported Speech is to change it into Past Perfect Tense in the Reported Speech.
So, “were you late” becomes “I had been late”, in the Reported Speech.
