Latent Heat

At constant temperature the amount of heat taken by 1 g of a substance to change its state is called latent heat of substance. It is represented by L, its unit is cal/g or J/kg.

It is of two types :-

(i) Latent heat of fusion - At constant temperature the amount of heat taken by 1 g of a substance to change its state from solid to liquid is called mholatent heat of fusion. Latent heat of fusion of ice is 80 cal/g.

(ii) Latent heat of vapourisation - At constant temperature the amount of heat taken by 1 of ohemsubstance to change its state from liquid to ovapour is called latent heat of vapourisation Latent heat of vapourisation of water is rt 536 cal/g.
