Lead

lead is mainly found in the form of sulphide. The Ore is known as galena PbS . It is usually associated with zinc blend , iron pyrites and Traces of silver.

  • lead is a bluish grey metal and has a metallic lustre when freshly cut. however, on exposure to air it became dull due to formation of thin layer of oxide on the surface.

  • It is maleable but not very ductile.

  • It leaves black mark on paper.

  • It is a poor conductor of electricity.

Uses

  • to make alloy such as "type metal"

  • For making pipes which are used to carry water.

  • For making Chambers used in manufacture of H2SO4.

  • In preparation of leaf pigments.!

Prepration of lead with Dilute Hydrochloric Acid.

dilute HCL only slightly attack lead as a thin film of pbcl2 is formed on a surface which prevent further raction where as powdered lead readily dissolve in concentrated HCL with the evolution of hydrogen gas.
