The Rowlatt Acts, passed by the British in 1919, created incredible tension between the Indians and the British. The acts were passed on March 18, 1919, and gave British authorities the ability process cases without holding a trial and without the use of a jury. They also condoned the use of torture during interrogation, did not allow Indian people to meet, suspended habeas corpus, and took away many civil liberties. The British imperial authorities came up with a way to attempt to deal with the revolutionary activities through the Rowlatt Acts. The acts had an enormous effect of India as a nation and stirred up much controversy.
Mohandas K. Gandhi decided to take action and speak out against what the British were doing to the Indians through their use of the Rowlatt Acts. Gandhi suggested the use of satyagraha, or “non-cooperation.” He believed that the Indian masses cold get their message across to the British by not doing what they said. Civil disobedience was his method of protest, and Gandhi did not advocate for violence as the method to solve conflicts. As a way of protesting, a hartal, or strike, occurred on April 6, 1919. The Indians closed down their businesses to fast and pray as a way of protesting against the Rowlatt Acts. During the hartal, Gandhi asked that the participants treat it like a day of mourning. There were public meetings held to voice their opinions and they stopped all work for the day. Gandhi toured southern India and spoke against the Rowlatt Acts. He also discussed the necessity of satyagraha in order to obtain swaraj, or self-rule. He founded his second newspaper, Young India, and discussed how people should deal with the Rowlatt Acts. Contact and relationships with the media was a very important aspect of civil obedience for Gandhi because he wanted to get his ideas and thoughts widespread and well known. Through the entire process, Gandhi did not believe that violence was needed to obtain Indian independence.
