In a few words, the general idea behind the Electron Transport Chain (ETC) is that it is in essence a series of macromolecules (proteins and enzymes or simply chemical compounds) which carry out the fundamental and essential task of energy production in a living cell by producing energy currency of life, ie the ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), or in short, this series of molecules serves the crucial job of producing substantial amount of energy in the cells (energy is produced by other mechanisms as well but is in small amounts as compared to this route). The underlying mechanism literally transfers electrons through and finally pumps out a proton gradient to accomplish the task. A short technical description may be that it is a series of proteins and enzymes which effectively produces an electrochemical gradients of proton across the membrane by means of specific redox (reduction-oxidation) reactions involving electron transfer through this chain.
