Because the earth spins on its axis.

Explanation:

As we all know that the earth is a spherical object which usually rotates on its own axis and around the sun , due to which the whole part of the earth cannot come in front of the light (sun) at a time.

This shows that, the half part of the earth is front of the sun bathed with  light and heat considerd as day time on earth, while the other half in dark and cold reason considerd as night .

It takes 24 hours to complete one spin so the day and night is of 12 hours each.
