Given :   1. 3x + 2y = 5

2. 3y - x = 9

To Find :

a) find two points that will satisfy the equation,

b) the slope and the y intercepts and

c) the x and y - intercepts.

Solution:

1. 3x + 2y = 5

x = 0  => y = 5/2

y = 0  => x = 5/3

( 0 , 5/2) and ( 5/3 , 0) satisfy  3x + 2y = 5

(3 , -2)  and ( 1 , 1)  also satisfy

3x + 2y = 5

=> 2y = -3x + 5

=> y = -(3/2)x + 5/2

Comparing with y = mx + c

m = slope = - 3/2

c = y intercept  = 5/2

3x + 2y = 5

=> 3x/5 + 2y/5 = 1

=> x/(5/3) + y/(5/2) = 1

Comparing with x/a + y/b = 1

x intercept = 5/3      (5/3 , 0)

y intercept = 5/2       (0 , 5/2)

Similarly for 3y - x  = 9

points  ( 0 , 3)  , ( -9 , 0)  ,  (3 , 4)

y = (1/3)x  +  3

slope = 1/3

y intercept = 3

x/(-9)  + y/3  = 1

x intercept  = - 9

y intercept = 3
