Afro-Latin American music is a word used to describe a fusion of African and Latin American cultures through music.
- The main types of music that constitute this genre include salsa, cumbia, merengue, and bachata.
- Salsa is music defined by a rhythm based on the Latin beat known as clave. This beat is maintained through percussion instruments. Salsa has a tendency to be very uplifting, lively, and danceable, and is said to be music to add a sauce to the spice of life. It has roots in the Afro-Spanish music traditions of Cuba and is also attributed to the Puerto Ricans of New York City.
- Cumbia is a style of Latin music that originated in Columbia and slowly became popular throughout South and Central America. It blends a wide range of African, Amerindian, and European styles. It uses musical instruments such as drums, flutes, maracas, and accordions. It is also a Colombian national dance and is representative of a larger culture and popular music.
- Merengue is a form of ballroom dance that is of Haitian and Dominican origin. It follows a 2/4 timing with one foot dragged on every step. Before it came to Santiago, Dominican Republic, it had deep roots in Africa and was based on repeating five-beat rhythmic patterns called a quintillo. It's African and Spanish influences that are rooted in old-world traditions.
- Bachata is a form of music that is defined by a slow, sensual beat accompanied by romantic or bittersweet lyrics, and filled with acoustic or electric guitar. The music is accompanied by a dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. It is a three-step with a Cuban hip motion, followed by a tap including a hip movement on the 4th beat.
