Mixtures containing substances that are attracted by magnets can be separated using a magnet. We can separate iron from a mixture of sand and iron, as only the iron is attracted to the magnet.

Evaporation is used to separate a soluble solid from a liquid. For example, copper sulfate is soluble in water – its crystals dissolve in water to form copper sulfate solution. During evaporation, the water evaporates away leaving solid copper sulfate crystals behind.

Separation techniques are those techniques that can be used to separate two different states of matter such as liquids and solids.

Explanation:

  • Decantation is a process for the separation of mixtures of immiscible liquids or of a liquid and a solid mixture such as a suspension. The mixtures that can be separated using decantation are: Oil and Water,  Boiled Pasta etc.
  • Evaporation is a process where liquids change to a gas or vapor. This is applicable for separation of: Water in the Cloth, Water turning into Steam etc.
  • Filtration is the removal of solid particles from a liquid or gaseous fluid using a filter medium that allows the fluid to go through while retaining the solid particles. The mixtures separated using this method are: Muddy Water.
  • Sieving is the process of using a sieve to separate fine particles from larger particles. The mixtures separated using this method are: Rice grains and Rice chaffs.
  • Magnets are simply used to separate those material which are attracted by magnets from those which are not. Like : Needle and Flour and Pins and wooden clips.
